Google is Developing a Keyboard for Your iPhone

Tech Review

If The Verge is to be believed Google is working on a third-party keyboard for iOS.

googleelogoYou might be thinking, “But I’m happy with my built-in iPhone keyboard. Why would I want something new?” Well just remember you felt that way a decade ago when you were still using a PalmPilot or Blackberry and everybody was snatching up the original iPhone. You got to keep up with the times, fella.

The in-development keyboard expands upon the Google keyboard currently found in Android devices. It utilizes the popular swipe-based typing where you basically drag your finger from letter to letter while Google guesses what you’re trying to spell.

Here’s where it begins to deviate from the Android keyboard (though the Android keyboard might feature these in the future). A Google logo icon allows you to access the search engine with a single tap. So no need to close one app and swipe around to access another. Supposedly you can perform the search from whichever app you’re in (Messages, E-mail, etc.).

Now this next one is exciting, there are buttons that allow for GIF and image searches most likely supported by Google Image search. We’ve been able to perform image searches on our desktop for years but we’ve been limited on our iPhoneIphon keyboard

Let’s say you’ve got a picture of someone or something and you want to find out where it came from, you can drop it right in the search engine and it’ll search for where else the image appears on the internet. This is great for copyright infringement searches or to scratch that curiosity itch.

This keyboard may be Google’s solution for their lack of money flow on the mobile search market. They may be the king of desktop internet searches but they’re lacking a bit on mobile searches.

While Google is not commenting on whether this rumor is true or not, Casey Newton of The Verge seems pretty certain. She states that the keyboard is being used by Google employees and has been for months.

We’ll have to wait to see if or when they release it. Let’s hope it’s sooner rather than later. I just want Google Image searches and Emoji’s equal to or better than Skype.
