People spend on average 5 hours and 41 minutes per day sitting at their desk and 7 hours sleeping at night – that’s nearly 13 hours out of 24 where we are inactive (1).  in a recent study by James Levin, an endocrinologist at the Mayo Clinic, it was shown that the cumulative impact of sitting all day for years is associated with a range of health problems, from obesity to diabetes to cancer (2).

Progressive companies around the globe are looking at ways to reduce the amount of time employees are in an inactive stance. We here at NewsWatch like to think of ourselves as progressive and started out by trying two different forms of active working positions – standing desks and stability balls.

There are drawbacks with both standing desks and stability balls.  For most people, fatigue will come into play.  Standing for prolonged periods will tire your back and legs, while sitting on a stability ball will tire your core and lower back, as well as your shoulders – a result of not having any arm rests.  But despite this, companies from San Francisco to Washington, DC are making these type of changes in the workplace.
