Mad Max: Fury Road is the fourth film set in the Mad Max universe, but not necessarily a direct sequel. The director, George Miller, has spent the last 16 years making an effort to reinvigorate the beloved desert-dwelling post-apocalyptic thrill ride of a movie series. His efforts were not in vain, as this is arguably the best film of the franchise to date.
The story follows Max Rockatansky, a former cop nearly turned into a feral beast by his circumstances. Haunted by memories of those he could not save while being surrounded by the insanity of the desert wastes he dwells, the film follows him as he faces insurmountable challenges. With an unbreakable and instinctual lust for survival he fights on, if only just to see another day.
The film was without a doubt crafted with detail and purpose in every shot.
Mad Max doesn’t waste a second of your time for the entire two hour run, as it blends action sequences and character development into a near exposition-free story telling experience. The mantra, “show, don’t tell” is expertly at play here, as each character grows and learns on their journey through the films events.
Ask anyone in the NewsWatch office and they will earnestly recommend this film. For those who still need convincing, a quick google search yields overwhelming praise from critics on sites such as Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. For once Hollywood gives us an action film that does not sacrifice good story telling for frenetic and mindless explosion porn. Do not hesitate to catch Mad Max: Fury Road while it’s still playing in theaters.
