Hulu has announced that it will be sticking to a weekly release schedule for its original content, despite Netflix’ successful model.
Hulu has a unique niche in the video-streaming market as it delivers what’s known as “next-day TV.” For other streaming platforms like Netflix you have to wait several months until after the full season is over before it hits Netflix. Hulu will stream current season episodes, generally the day after they air.
But like Netflix, Hulu has begun to create and release its own original content. Unlike Netflix though, they’re going to hold off and release each episode of their original series weekly. Netflix has created a new and exciting model whereby they drop an entire season of their original shows all at once, allowing viewers to binge-watch. This has proven successful with such shows as House of Cards, Orange is the New Black and Daredevil (my personal favorite).
Now I’ll be the first to admit that I was weary of this “drop a whole season of a new show all at once” model. I’m a bit of an old-school freak where I appreciate and use the heck out of technological advances but sometimes think maybe it wouldn’t be a horrible idea to push reset on the whole internet-thing.
But then they dropped Daredevil all at once and I was hooked, binge-watching the whole thing in a week. I was instantly a convert and now want, nay demand, all my TV shows be delivered to me in this model. Hulu sadly doesn’t agree with my new-found appreciation.
Senior VP and Head of Content of Hulu, Craig Erwich shared his view with the Television Critics Association press tour, “We value the shared experience and the joy of the water cooler that is television.”
That’s all well and good and I don’t disagree with him but I personally have seen just as much buzz about Game of Thrones as I did House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. Granted this was in my personal circles so it can be debated that one model might create more buzz than the other when looked at statistically.
I feel this is a sign that Hulu refuses to stay up with the times. They already contribute to the once-a-week model with their next-day TV streaming of current seasons of shows, so that’s covered. Why not release their original content all at once?
As a Hulu subscriber this is just another reason why me and Hulu just don’t seem to gel. I have constant problems with their platform which just seems like a glitch-fest no matter what device I’m using it on. Netflix’ streaming platform is just way more on point with very few technical difficulties.
I really hope this refusal to let go and conform with the times isn’t a nail in Hulu’s coffin as I believe the niche they’ve carved out is necessary but they’re going to have pay attention to consumer desire if they’re going to stand the test of time.
