Disney Develops Smart Watch That Knows What You’re Touching

By: Nick Gambino

When you think of smart watches or really electronic devices in general, Disney isn’t usually the first company that comes to mind. Nor is it the 3rd, 4th or possibly even on the list. But they’re aiming to change that with a new smart watch that they’re developing which knows when you’re touching something and what that something is.

Let’s say you touch a doorknob, specifically your office doorknob, the Disney smart watch will sense that. It’ll sense anything you touch such as your toothbrush, your car door, your computer, etc. It’s able to do that by using a system called EM-Sense. EM-Sense “senses” the very tiny electromagnetic signals that run through the body when touching an object. Different objects produce different patterns which can be sensed thus indicating what the object is.

This is pretty cool stuff. But you may be thinking to yourself, “Yeah so what? What’s it going to do for me?” It’s always about you, isn’t it? Always me, me, me. Well, lucky for you this one does do something for you, so pipe down. (I apologize for losing my cool.)

By differentiating objects this smart watch can pull up the relevant apps and functions related to that object. For instance, if you touch your car door the watch can pull up your GPS. If you touch your office door towards the end of the day, it can remind you to pick up dog food on the way home. The list is endless, if an object can be attributed to an app, it’ll pull it up.

It can even go a step further. Let’s say you step on a scale, it’ll capture the data and display it on the watch screen. Or if you sit down on your couch in front of the TV it may offer to turn on the game for you. Really, as I said, the possibilities for this type of technology are limitless.

Now the Disney smart watch is merely in the prototype stage. This prototype currently needs to be hooked up to a laptop to decode the data which is unworkable for a portable smart watch. We’ll have to see if it ever goes beyond that. Whether Disney will make its own watch or try and get EM-Sense integrated into existing smart watches is unclear.

Yet another way in which Disney is slowly taking over the world. They now own Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, the best theme parks in the world and a multitude of other enterprises. So why not take over electronics? If this smart watch works out, expect to see Disney smart phones and tablets next.
