This week Spotify has launched a new video channel on their Android and iOS apps.
Spotify has largely (or solely) been known for their streaming music feature. In fact, they’re pretty much the leading platform for music consumption, having dethroned Pandora long ago. But with Apple Music, Tidal and a number of other streaming music services trying to get in on the action, Spotify needs to stay fresh and new. That means adding new features and content, like videos.
To access video shows on Spotify just open up the app, hit Browse (found in the little dropdown menu on the top left) and then hit “Shows.” You’ll have the option of selecting “Video Shows” or “Audio Shows.”
“Audio Shows” is where you’ll find Spotify podcasts which they’ve been featuring for several months now. “Video Shows” of course is where you’ll find the new video content. You can find stuff by MTV, BBC, Comedy Central, Vice News, NBC, Adult Swim and one of my favorites, ESPN.
There are a wide range of videos including Ellen DeGeneres interviews with celebrities, Robot Chicken shorts, Jimmy Fallon interviews and the wildly interesting ESPN 30 for 30 Shorts. Can you tell I like ESPN?
These are pretty much the videos you’d find on their YouTube channels minus ads that you’ll most certainly have to sit through when watching on YouTube. I don’t want you to think that Spotify is offering any new content here, not yet at least.
Now, you don’t have to worry about the video content getting in the way of your music as it’s tucked neatly away as I described earlier. It’s not currently in the main menu (but it probably will be at some point).
I’m not sure exactly how they’re planning to monetize these videos because as I said they are ad-free. Additionally, videos are available not only to subscribers but also to users who partake in the free version of Spotify. Soooo, I don’t see a lot of money in that. But I’m sure they have a plan.
Will you be using the video feature in the Spotify app? Let us know in the comments below.
