A Printer That Prints Itself – The Magic of 3D Printing

By Raktim Debnath

3D printing is one of the latest marvels of our modern technological era. The basic idea of 3D printing is that you can download or make 3D models of anything that you want in your computer or smartphone, and print that object directly in your 3D printer. Voila – You got what you wanted!

Even though 3D printing technology has been in use for almost a decade with scientists, researchers and architects, a new generation of cheap and affordable 3D printers are on their way to your home which you can use for your daily needs.

Are you wondering how on earth will a 3D printer serve you? Well for a starter, you can print part of any broken stuff that you own like door knob, chair, etc. and fix it by adding your 3D printed element. You can print jewelries for you significant others, toys for kids, pots and utensils for home and so much more.

The day is not far when every one of us will have a 3D printer in our home. At least this is the aim of the RepRap project. This British company is developing a unique 3D printer that is able to replicate itself. It will do so by printing several components of itself which can be joined together to build another identical printer.

Their work is based on Open Source Design (like our friends over at BeagleBoard.Org), which means anyone from anywhere in the world can download their design and use it for personal or commercial purpose. This concept is also known as General Public License, allowing you to use and modify their product without any fear of copyright issues.

Needless to say, this will be a huge step forward for all of us tech geeks out there. Some are even calling it the beginning of new industrial revolution. Once you own a 3D printer, there will be no need to buy many things. You can just simply print it out.

Large scale mass production in companies and factories could be obsolete. Instead 3D modelling of products will be the new game. No wonder so many people are investing their money and talent on this new technology.

What do you think about 3D printers? Will you buy one for your family?
