Virtual Reality: The future is already here!

Author: Bryan Tropeano

Virtual Reality, or simply VR, is the new buzzword that’s on everyone’s mind these days. Even though it’s not a very new technological phenomenon, only recently has it reached to certain usable levels for the masses, and thus shaping one more of our science fiction fantasies into reality.

What exactly is Virtual Reality? In academic words it is a computer simulated immersive media which replicates an environment, be it real or fantasy world, and makes us feel like we are present there physically, as well as allowing us to interact with that world. It is a fully immersive system unlike the flat screens that we’re used to now.

Certainly the advent of virtual reality has opened a lot of new frontiers for a lot of industries: from gaming, movies to architectural visualizations. It can be used in simulators to replicate real world situation and to train and educate soldiers, pilots, astronauts, etc.

The gaming industry is one of the major sectors to be affected by this new technology. A great examples of this is Oculus Rift by the company called Oculus VR. Starting as a Kickstarter campaign, it managed to raise 2.5 million dollars and scheduled to release its product on the 28th of March, 2016. Its recent success came along when Facebook acquired the company for 2 billion dollars. If a company like Facebook can see bright future in Virtual Reality, then there’s a good chance this technology is here to stay

They have already released more than 5 prototype version of Rift to the public and developers, which showed a great potential of success for this virtual reality product. Thousands of developers are on their way to making great game content for the new gaming device. The price for Oculus Rift is set to $599.

Architectural design and visualization is another vast field where VR is set to expand its horizon. Thanks to VR, clients, developers and architects can now feel being inside a building and interact with it before it is constructed. New game-engine softwares like Unity3D, Unreal 4, etc. have heavily invested on it to make their software, ArchViz, user friendly. It is safe to say that this will open up doors to new creative professions.

We are looking forward to new amazin ways of how Virtual Reality can be incorporated to our lives. The future is certainly here!
