Watch the Big East Tournament in Virtual Reality

By: Nick Gambino

With March Madness in full swing and die hard college basketball fans losing their friggin’ minds, it makes sense that Fox Sports would capitalize on said insanity by putting 360 cameras courtside during the Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament to create a full Virtual Reality experience.

NextVR will be responsible for shooting the games and streaming the VR content straight through their app. This is every basketball fiend’s dream. Next, VR plans to put you in center court seats in Madison Square Garden with the luxury of listening in on player huddles and viewing shots from under the basket.

Now if they really want to create an immersive experience maybe they’ll also allow us to stand in line behind 86 people waiting to use the bathroom or help create the smell of freshly spilled beer all over my jersey.

Full stats and scores will be fed to you right through your VR headset so feel free to fully immerse yourself and tune out the rest of the world. That’s what sports are all about, right? Alone with nobody to keep you company but yourself with no interaction with any other human being.

Alright, alright. I’m not knocking it. If you’re going to be watching the games alone anyways you might as well take part in the VR experience but if you have a bunch of people over then it just doesn’t work. Maybe you can pass around the headset for everybody to check it out but that’s about it.

I for one prefer watching sports in the company of friends and family for the social experience of it all.

Now here’s where it gets exclusive. Fans can only watch the VR games with a Samsung Gear VR headset which requires a Samsung smartphone. Bummer for any of us iPhone users.

I don’t know, now that I can’t have it…I want it even more. I think I’ll invite my friend, Neal over strictly for the Gear VR hook-up. Maybe I can get him to spill beer on me too.

The VR broadcast starts on March 10th and continues through the quarterfinal, semifinal and championship games.
