National School Choice Week | NewsWatch Review

WASHINGTON, DC – In January, millions of Americans raise awareness about the importance of education reform at more than 15,000 events planned for National School Choice Week (January 24 – 30, 2016). The Week will be America’s largest-ever series of events focusing on K-12 education.

Across the country, more and more families are demanding school choice – a 2015 survey of likely November 2016 voters showed that 69 percent support school choice. Do parents in your state have the information they need to find the best school for their child? What kind of events can members of the community attend to celebrate educational opportunity and learn more about school choice in their state?

Technology is drastically changing the way your child learns and January is the month when parents really need to start making important decisions for the 2015-2016 school year.

Andrew Campanella, the president of National School Choice Week, explains to us how technology is changing childhood education.

“The internet is changing how kids learn. Today’s kids are learning using digital technology, the internet, using resources when I went to school didn’t exist.
Parents and schools are adapting to provide all students with a better access to online courses, applications to teach history, online science labs, different ways to submit work. So many ways that technology is improving education and enhancing learning.

Technology enhances school choice options because parents are able to choose to send
their students to a brick and mortar school for most courses but for another course they
can tap into an online class. Maybe the local school district wasn’t able to hire a teacher for that subject. It’s providing so many different options and has the students learn from some of the best educators in the world.

What we’re going to see in the next 10 years is even more customization in education. In addition to school choice, parents will be able to have course choice.

In rural areas, it is difficult to get students to different schools. Parents want more choices. Online learning, digital learning, online course work can help parents expand the horizons of their kids regardless of their geography. That is vitally important. A child who lives in a rural area should have the same education as a child who lives in a metropolitan city.” -Andrew Campanella, the president of National School Choice Week
