America’s Worst Traffic Cities | NewsWatch Review

Have you ever thought about how much time you have lost to sitting in traffic? According to the INRIX 9th annual traffic score card report some cities have real reasons to complain. Joining us today to tell us more about the state of traffic in the U.S. is Chris Handley the Vice President of Product Management and Analytics at INRIX.

“Our study collects data from 250 million different vehicles on the road. We use that to create an accurate real time traffic log. We put that together and analyze that over the course of the year. This year we found that commuters have spent over 8 billion hours stuck in traffic across the U.S. The top city in that ranking is Los Angeles with 81 hours a year lost to a congested commute. DC and San Francisco are number two and three with 75 hours a year.

There are two primary economic factors that are driving this growth. The first is GDP. As unemployment drops, more people move to urban areas- that’s more people on the roads. Those individuals are increasing congestion. Second big factor is fuel prices. As fuel prices drop, more people are willing to drive, people are less advised to take alternative forms of transportation, and that also increases the amount of gridlock.”

To find more information head to INRIX.com where can look up the most recent information about their scorecard, most congested traffic corridors, and look at your commute.
