In its latest show of support for the (RED) campaign Apple has announced a new vibrant red iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.
While we’ve already seen the red Apple Watch, red Beats headphones as well as red iPhone and iPad cases the phone itself is now red. (RED) is a campaign that brings awareness to AIDS and HIV and garners support for the effort to get rid of the deadly diseases.
They do this by partnering with major brands who then donate up to 50% of their profits from (RED) products to the effort. We’ve see this with major companies like Gap but Apple so far has been the biggest donor with over $130 million donated. While in the past 10 years alone (RED) has raised over $465 million.
The campaign is simple. The brands create (RED) Products to raise awareness. A large percentage of the profits are sent to the Global Fund who in turn finance HIV/AIDS programs. A large part of the effort is concentrated in Africa as 70 percent of those that are HIV-positive live in that continent.
Apple made note on their site that their partnership “has supported programs that provide counseling, testing, and medicine that prevents the transmission of HIV from a mother to her unborn child.”
“The introduction of this special edition iPhone in a gorgeous red finish is our biggest (PRODUCT)RED offering to date in celebration of our partnership with (RED), and we can’t wait to get it into customers’ hands,” Tim Cook announced.
The new red iPhone looks pretty cool. The striking red really seems to pop. I can see it being particularly popular and with the profits going to a good cause that’s ok by me.
You’ll be able to purchase the new (RED) special edition iPhone this Friday, March 24th. Only the 128GB and 256GB iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will get the red treatment. Prices will start as low as $749.
