Who would have thought the time would come that we could utter the words, “Ok Google, pre-heat the oven” and not mean it sarcastically? GE just announced a partnership with Google that allows you to control Wi-Fi-enabled appliances through Google Home.
This announcement comes on the heels of the similar integration of Alexa through the use of GE’s Geneva Home. Similarly, Google Home won’t control the appliances directly but rather through the Geneva Home system.
Appliances submitting to the will of the Google Assistant include dishwashers, ovens, refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, etc. To start controlling them with just the use of your voice pair up “Geneva Home” with the “Ok Google” command.
Once done, you can start saying “Ok Google, ask Geneva Home to set the oven timer to 20 minutes” or “Ok Google, ask Geneva Home to make hot water” or “Ok Google, ask Geneva Home to burn Dave’s dinner.” Ok, well maybe the last one won’t work but you get the idea.
You can monitor as well as control the appliances by asking Geneva Home the status of your laundry or if the dishes are clean. This adds a convenience that when used properly should help you complete chores more efficiently.
“Everyone’s busy these days and our consumers are looking for simpler and more convenient ways to control their home, especially when busy in the kitchen or working around the house,” Liz VerSchure, VP for GE Appliances connected strategy said in a press release. “Integrating our full suite of connected appliances with the Google Assistant makes it easier for owners to control their appliances and get on with their day.”
Next up for Google Assistant, it looks like their making their way to the Apple Store with their very own iOS app. This is according to a recent report by Bloomberg.
I’m just waiting to see who wins the whole pot at the end of this tech giant war. Whether it be Apple, Google or Uber, I have a feeling when all is said and done only one guy will be standing. Well, at least we already know who’s going to win the restaurant franchise war.
