“What is real?” Well, believe it or not, Matrix 4 is definitely real. The sequel to the genre-bending, mega-hit that made us all question our reality, is finally happening.
The Matrix is one of my all-time favorite movies and one that I can re-watch over and over without feeling an ounce of boredom. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for its two sequels – The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions – which were two films that I was incredibly hyped for but alas, didn’t live up to the original. The premise of those two films certainly had potential, but with an over-reliance on CGI and muddy exposition and plot that led to what I felt was the laziest of deus ex machina, they just couldn’t deliver.
This newest installment will hopefully leave the franchise on a high note, which I’m all for. Luckily, Lana Wachowski, one of the creators of the original trilogy, is back to write and direct.
“We could not be more excited to be re-entering ‘The Matrix’ with Lana,” WB Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich tells Variety, the first outlet to report the story. “Lana is a true visionary – a singular and original creative filmmaker – and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.”
What is even more surprising is the return of Keanu Reeves and Carrie Ann Moss, Neo and Trinity respectively. Spoiler alert: both characters bit the dust at the end of The Matrix Revolutions.
There’s no word as to what the plot will be or how two dead characters will fit in or if Morpheus will show up. There’s a script already written so it can be assumed the answers already exist, they’re just not letting the cat out of the bag just yet.
“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now,” Lana says. “I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”
Are you ready to see how deep the rabbit hole goes?
