Cadillac Unveils New Luxury Electric SUV

By: Nick Gambino

We’ve finally got our first full look at the new 2023 Cadillac Lyriq, the auto company’s luxury electric SUV. Its low-to-the-ground design was by choice rather than a necessity like some other EVs.

The car employs the new GM Ultium battery which stacks its lithium-ion cells both vertically and horizontally. What that means is there’s room to design the car as high or low as you want it. When asked why they went with the low design, the executive director of Cadillac Design, Andrew Smith, simply said “Because it looks awesome.” You can’t hate on that level of confidence. And it does look awesome.

The car sports a range of 300 miles on a full charge, with a long, luxury body that sits on 22-inch wheels. The interior is as luxurious as Cadillac gets with leather seats and a massive display that stretches horizontally behind the steering wheel.

The screen, which measures in at 35 inches wide and 5 inches tall, was designed around the driver assistance feature, Super Cruise. This is the same system being used on an array of Cadillac cars starting in 2021. Using cameras, GPS, sensors, and LiDAR, Super Cruise offers a hand-free driving and lane change experience.

Cadillac isn’t the only SUV making waves. The Ford Mustang Mach-E is easily one of the sexiest all-electric SUVs on the market. Carving up the road from 0-60 in 4.8 seconds with an upcoming model promising to do it in 3.5, the EV delivers on the promise of power and beauty.

Unlike gas-powered Mustangs that are known for their roaring engines and trembling you can feel in your guts, the Mach-E delivers on the smooth, quiet drive that only electric vehicles can promise. Add in the button-activated handles and front trunk space (yes, it’s called a “frunk” and no, I don’t like to say it) and you’ve got a vehicle that can maybe rival the Tesla.

I’m in love with my Tesla Model Y so you’re going to pick up on some bias here. Hitting the pavement at a cool 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and an Autopilot feature that allows me to take long drives with ease, I can’t imagine ever buying another car.

Whichever electric SUV you end up with (because you totally should get one) you almost can’t lose. The newest models popping off the line are innovative and cutting edge.
