The new Google Maps update will make it easier to find fast-charging EV stations when you’re on the go. The GPS app already had the ability to show you charging stations in your area, but this will allow you to specifically look for those that offer a quick charge-up.
No matter the type of EV you’re driving – Tesla, Ford Mach-E, Chevy Bolt or one of those off-brand guys – Google Maps will help you find a fast-charging station for your electric car. You’ll be able to filter according to your vehicle’s plug type. That way you don’t accidentally wind up at a Tesla Supercharger with your Mach-E and no adaptor.
Here’s all you have to do to find fast-charging EV stations. Simply type in “charging station” in the search field like you’ve always done. Then filter it down by tapping “fast charge.” Now you’ll only see results for those stations that offer a quick boost to get you where you’re going.
If you want to ensure you’re going to a station that is compatible with your car, just tap “your plugs” right next to the “fast charge” button. This feature technically already existed, but now it’s easier to find and use.
EV-friendly content isn’t the only thing being added in the new Google Maps update. The resident AR tool is also getting a nifty tune-up. They’re adding “Search with Live View” so you can use the AR function with your camera to locate businesses and activities in your immediate vicinity.
Just fire up the Google Maps app, tap the camera and point it at things around you. You’ll see a bunch of information on banks, hotels, restaurants, landmarks, etc. Think of it like a Google Maps search but directly through your camera.
It’ll display reviews, price range, how busy that place is and whether or not it’s open. They’re only launching Search with Live View in six big cities to start – London, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, San Francisco and Tokyo.
The update should be available now for you to download on your Android or iPhone.
