If you know any gamers, you probably haven’t seen them for a few days. No, they’re not missing, they’ve just locked themselves in their homes so they can immerse themselves in the new PlayStation 5 game Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The long-awaited game dropped on October 20th and tore up the gaming charts like a blazing fire.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has now put out a press release that the game sold over 2.5 million copies in just 24 hours. That means it is PlayStation Studios’ fastest selling game in history. The new title was created by Insomniac Games alongside PlayStation Studios and Marvel Games.
“Insomniac Games holds itself to incredibly high standards when it comes to delivering engaging and innovative gameplay experiences,” Senior VP of Global Marketing, Sales and Business Operations at Sony Interactive Entertainment, Eric Lempel, said in a press release announcing the milestone. “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is Insomniac Games’ third installment in the franchise for PlayStation. Built from the ground up to take advantage of the unique features of the PlayStation 5, the goal was to massively build off the action, storylines, and features from the first two games.”
And that’s exactly what they’ve done with what many are calling a masterpiece. They’ve created a huge world (well, New York City technically) in which you can swing through neverending cityscapes in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn either as Spider-Man (Peter Parker) or Spider-Man (Miles Morales). There are even some missions where you can play as Mary Jane Watson or Venom.
These are the same studios who gave us Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2018 and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales in 2020 so it’s no surprise they knocked it out of the park. They kept what worked on those previous titles and built out so much more. This is what a sequel should look and feel like.
“Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is a tour de force, shattering records for the first-party title,” Andrew Tropeano, Host of News Around America (www.newsaroundamerica.com), said of the phenomenon surrounding the game. “This proves that players will turn out in droves for a game that brilliantly combines a cinematic storyline with amazing game mechanics and an expansive world.”
