Coaching A Team: How To Build A Good Rapport

No matter what sport you’re playing, building a strong team takes more than explaining the rules of the game. As a coach, it’s your job to build a rapport with your team that benefits everyone. Teams that are well connected often play better and increase their chances of winning.

Whether you coach adults or children, the same tips apply for building a good rapport. Take a look at what you need to know.

Understand What Motivates Individuals

Each individual will have a different reason for wanting to play the game. Some may be competitive and enjoy the feeling of winning, some may want to have fun, and others may want to make people in their lives proud. Once you get to the root of what motivates your players, you can work with it.

When you understand what drives a person, you can use it to inspire them. Ask yourself, who are my players and why do they come here?

Unite Your Team

It’s not enough to have individuals on your team; they have to feel like they are connected. In addition to playing your chosen sport, it can help to do some team building exercises. You may also want to think about bringing the team together outside of sessions to get to know one another.

Using custom sport polo shirts is a great way to bring everyone together on a team and make them feel united while playing. Having a team kit can make players feel like they belong.

Build Good Working Relationships

There has to be a strong relationship between you and your players. To take advice and constructive criticism on board, your players need to respect you. You can build that respect by gaining their trust.

Always do exactly as you say you’ll do and carry yourself in a professional manner while coaching. Being as transparent as you can be will help to build up trust. Do everything with integrity and honesty and you can’t go wrong.

Develop Your Communication Skills

Excellent communication skills are a must for anyone hoping to coach a team. Not only will you need to have conversations with all of your players individually but you’ll also need to explain how your team should play the game. Communication without frustration in sports can be difficult but the more control you have over your feelings, the easier it will be to communicate.

Additionally, your players will look to you for inspiration. So, if your team is down on points at half time, what you communicate to them could make all the difference in the second half.

Keep Learning

Like many other industries, sport is ever-evolving. As a coach, you need to keep training and learning from experts so you can pass new knowledge to your team. Sports apps can help with this. Your team will respect that you still play the sport in addition to coaching it.
