The Nintendo Switch just celebrated its 7th birthday in March. When it originally launched, the console was an important milestone for the company, successfully putting Nintendo back in the console game in a meaningful way. With Xbox and PlayStation dominating the space and the release of the Wii U a failure, they needed the win.
Now, the legendary video game company is readying to announce a successor to the Switch. For the time being we’ll call it the Nintendo Switch 2. While we won’t get any substantial info until 2025, they have officially announced that the Switch 2 is coming.
“This is Furukawa, President of Nintendo,” an X post on Nintendo’s official account reads. “We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015. We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.”

This fiscal year ends on March 31st, 2025. So let’s take that as an announcement of an incoming announcement of something that will be released next year on the 10th anniversary of the announcement of the original Nintendo Switch 2.
Apparently, a big reason they are being cagey about an official announcement is that it will affect sales of the OG Switch. The console is already projected to sell less units this year by more than 2 million and they don’t need to make sales tougher if they don’t have to.
