Adobe Adds New AI Image Generators to Firefly

By: Nick Gambino

While many are using AI to have full-blown conversations with artificially intelligent robots or to perform intensive searches for data, there are a ton of pseudo creatives obsessed with generating images.

Generative AI image models were a big part of the explosion in AI popularity over the last couple of years. With Mindjourney, DALL-E 3 and even Open AI offering a platform for generative images at a snap, there are plenty of options out there.

Adobe is being smart by not only offering their own generative AI model but also including third-party generators. The company just announced new proprietary AI models as well as a partnership with other companies, bringing OpenAI and Google Imagen 3 and Veo 2 image “creators” into their app.

Firefly is an Adobe app that boasts a suite of generative AI models. This week they’ve launched Firefly Image Model 4 and Firefly Image Model 4 Ultra, the newest iteration of their very own generators.

Choosing which of the two Firefly models is right for you depends on what you’re looking for. Model 4 is designed to be faster while still being a huge improvement on their predecessor in terms of quality. Users are able to create images in 2K resolution which is pretty good on a quick timeline.

If you’re looking for something even more realistic and even higher quality, then you’re going to want to use Model 4 Ultra. This is going to take a little longer to generate than Model 4, but the name of the game here is quality.

In addition to all of that, they are also making their generative AI video tool available to the general public, finally closing out their beta.

I’m not a huge fan of AI “art” as you can probably glean from my snark and many other articles on the subject. I just can’t help but sneer when someone enters a prompt, gets back an image and then feels proud of what they’ve “created.” It just feels like when a parent tries to claim credit for their kid’s success as if it’s their own. But in this case it’s worse because it’s just a soulless computer program spitting out advanced math. What’s beautiful about that on a human level?

Anyways, I guess I’m just an old guy screaming at the artificially created clouds longing for the days when clouds formed from the swirling chaos of the universe in some kismetic beauty that you just can’t fake.
