Microsoft Announces Call of Duty: Black Ops 7

By: Nick Gambino

In a surprising move, Microsoft announced the next installment of their popular first-person shooter game series will be Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.

When the company announced the new COD at this week’s Xbox Games Showcase, we all let out a collective “huh?” It’s not that Black Ops 7 wasn’t expected at some point, but it’s coming directly after last year’s Black Ops 6. We don’t traditionally get two of the same series of COD games back to back.

Typically we’d get a Black Ops game followed by a Warfare, or other title, followed by another Black Ops and so on. This year they decided to shake it all up and I’m not sure exactly why. Is this going to be a smaller stop-gap game or have they gone all out with Black Ops 7? It’s hard to tell as of now because the details on the upcoming installment are minimal.

So what do we know? Well, the game is set in 2035 and features David Mason, the main character in Black Ops II and who would later appear again in Black Ops 4. It’s been confirmed that he will be played by Heroes and This is Us actor Milo Ventimiglia.

In this new game, Mason heads up an elite team battling a “manipulative enemy” (most likely The Guild and Raul Menendez). That’s vague and could be applied to almost any Black Ops title. Black Ops 7 supposedly takes place 40 years after Black Ops 6 and after the events of Black Ops II and will serve as a direct sequel to the latter which is one of the most popular games in the entire series.

We do know that the game will be bringing co-op campaign which was sorely missing from last year’s Black Ops 6

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will be released on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox PC, Battle.net and Steam. I expect Call of Duty to eventually hit the all-new Nintendo Switch 2, but I don’t know if this title will make it in. As of now, there is no release date, but it will be dropping some time in 2025.
