New Star Wars: The Force Awakens Poster and Trailer Strike Nostalgic Chord

By: Nick Gambino

Two days ago in a galaxy very, very close to home, a new Star Wars: The Force Awakens poster and trailer dropped online to massive fanfare.

The poster follows the similar artistic imagery that has appeared on each of the posters for the earlier six movies in the series. A collage of different characters and images provide insight into the epic scale of the film and in some ways detail the important facets of the plot.

The poster was generally well received although some question the absence of Luke Skywalker. In fact, other than an announcement of his return in the film, we haven’t gotten any real look at the old Jedi master played by Mark Hamill. Now lest you think they’re pulling a fast one on us, he did provide the voiceover for the first trailer. Although that was really an expansion on dialogue that he recited in Return of the Jedi. Soooo, we’ll just have to wait and see.

Speaking of trailers, the new one is just as fulfilling and exciting as the earlier ones released. It reveals much more while still keeping so much under wraps. We now have a bit of insight into who Kylo Ren is, besides a bad guy played by Adam Driver. Specifically, his mission to carry on what Darth Vader started.

But probably most nostalgic and, I’ll admit, tear-jerking is our first glimpse of Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) in over 30 years. In one particular emotional scene Han and Leia embrace each other as Leia seems to cry.

Both the poster and trailer were released to coincide with tickets going online Monday night. The kinetic energy of Star Wars fandom could be felt quite literally as ticketing platforms like Fandango either crashed or had horribly spotty service when the new Star Wars installment tickets went on pre-sale.

While there’s no doubt this was frustrating for those trying to buy tickets two months early (first world problems) it was also great publicity for Disney and their newly acquired multibillion dollar franchise.

On Tuesday Fandango had to release a statement:

“This is an extraordinary time for the industry, which experienced unprecedented ticketing demand last night for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In fact, Fandango traffic surged to 7 times its typical peak levels, propelling Fandango’s advance sales for Star Wars to a record-setting first day of pre-sales. For Star Wars, we have already sold 8 times as many tickets as we did on the first day of sales for the previous record holder.”

Well that’s saying something! Marketing for this film has been on point, in large part due to the fact that the movie seems to have been masterfully helmed by J.J. Abrams.

I for one am excited and throwing my support behind The Force Awakens. In the words of one little green creature “It’s not easy being green.” Wait…that’s not right…ah here it is, “May the Force be with you.”
