‘Battlefield 2042’ Drops in October

Battlefield has held its own on a…errr…battlefield littered with military-themed first-person shooters like Call of Duty and Counter-Strike. Much of its popularity comes from the team-based strategy integral to gameplay. Now we’ve got news of the latest installment.

Electronic Arts announced the newest multiplayer-only title Battlefield 2042 due on October 22. The game will be released on major consoles like PS 4 and 5 and Xbox One and Xbox Series X and S. It’ll also be available for PC.

Battlefield 2042 is an evolution of the franchise and embraces what our players want – the ultimate Battlefield multiplayer sandbox with intense combat and a ton of incredible, unexpected events,” Oskar Gabrielson, the general manager of DICE studio, said about the game.

In line with the large team-based strategy element of the game, Battlefield 2042 will allow up to 128 players on some maps, and up to 64 players on some other smaller maps as well as any map on Xbox One and PS4.

As you might have guessed, this one takes place in a somewhat dystopian future where nations have collapsed under food, energy and clean water shortages. This results in an all-out refugee crisis.

“Among these Non-Patriated, or Non-Pats, are families, farmers, engineers – and even soldiers,” the game synopsis says. “Amidst this crisis, the United States and Russia draw the world into an all-out war. No-Pat Specialists join both sides, not fighting for a flag, but for the future of the Non-Patriated in this new world.

You’ll play as a new type of role in the Battlefield world called a “Specialist.” Expect fully customizable loadouts and specialized traits and skills. At launch there will be 10 different Specialists to choose from, including engineer: Pyotr “Boris” Guskovsky, assault: Webster Mackay, recon: Wikus “Casper” Van Daele and support: Mara Flack.

Gameplay will include dynamic maps with changing weather and environments while you play. So expect a tornado or sandstorm to do some damage to all your well-laid plans. Some of the modes are the same, like the popular Conquest and Breakthrough, with new ones being added like Hazard Zone. This latter mode is described as a “high-stakes, squad-based game-type.”

You can pre-order now and gear up to play on October 22, 2021.
