The new Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra smartphone apparently has a feature that we don’t really see that often in phones – the ability to bypass the battery and power the phone directly when connected to an outlet.
This feature is a great way to prevent overheating. By cutting off power to the battery it allows it to recover while the charge is redirected to your phone so you can keep using it even on a “low battery.” This was first reported by the YouTube channel NL Tech who covered it in an in-depth video on the new phone.
“To prevent phone heating, pause charging when a USB Power Delivery enabled charger is connected and the battery is over 20%,” the Pause USB Power Delivery option says in the Game Booster menu in settings.
This obviously is a convenient feature for managing power consumption and preventing an overheated battery, but there are times when you’re not going to want to use it. For example, if you’re looking to charge up before you go out but also want to keep using your phone at the same time. If this setting is on, your battery will have received no charge while plugged in. Sure you were able to use your phone because it was receiving its juice directly from your outlet, but the battery was getting no love.
The phone won’t hit shelves until next week so we’ll have to wait and see if this battery bypassing charging feature is going to get a wide release. Some are reporting that they don’t see it in their Game Booster menu as an option. It could be undergoing testing for now with a limited number of Galaxy S23 Ultra users gaining access.
Samsung hasn’t officially announced the feature, so we’re not even sure if it’s going to appear in all versions of the S23 series if at all.
