The Next iPhone SE Most Likely Going OLED

By: Nick Gambino

If rumors are to be believed, the next iPhone SE is going to get some major upgrades, including an OLED display.

According to a report from Nikkei Asia, Apple has ordered OLED screens from China and South Korea to fit on the upcoming budget phone, indicating their move away from LCD displays. This would complete the circle, bringing OLED to all iterations of the modern iPhone.

This will effectively cut out Sharp and JDI from having anything further to do with Apple smart devices as the companies don’t mass produce OLED panels.

Just a few years ago, they were making 70% of the iPhone screens. With Apple’s move to OLED displays starting with the iPhone X, that eventually whittled down until the two panel suppliers were only providing LCD screens for the SE. And now with this recent news, we’ve reached the end of an era.

OLED is simply a superior screen and has slowly but surely sent LCD to the graveyard. When Apple moves to put OLED into even their cheapest phones, you know it’s time to punch the clock.

In addition to getting a major display upgrade, the iPhone SE is expected to get other goodies that will make it feel like much more than a budget smartphone. It’s said to have a 6.1-inch display, Face ID replacing Touch ID, an iPhone-only Action Button and possibly even the tech giant’s new AI – Apple Intelligence.

If this is starting to sound a lot like a regular iPhone, you’re right. It’s probably the tech giant’s ploy to make it more popular. One thing we most likely won’t see is a big camera system. The new SE will supposedly still only house a single camera. That is why it’s still considered a cheaper, budget option. The camera is a big sell.

Of course, these are all still in the rumor stage, but we’ll know soon enough what’s true and what isn’t. The new iPhone SE is expected some time in early 2025.
