Apple’s First Foldable iPhone is Coming

By: Nick Gambino

Another week another strong Apple rumor supported by a few of the most reliable tech analysts out there, including Ming-Chi Kuo. This time it’s a ton of new information on what the long-rumored but inevitable foldable iPhone will look like.

It looks like the foldable iPhone is going to feature a book-style design so when it’s closed it’ll resemble an iPhone, but when you open it up, you’ll have something about the size of an iPad mini.

Rumors suggest the new iPhone’s outside display will be 5.5 inches while the inside display will be a creaseless 7.8 inches. The crease has been the bane of every foldable phone. It’s tough to create a hinge system that doesn’t create a permanent wrinkle in the bendable display. Apple has supposedly figured it out.

The robust hinge will be a combination of stainless steel and titanium alloy. This will allow for constant folding and unfolding. Speaking of which, when it’s folded up it’ll be about 9.5mm thick at its biggest and when it’s unfolded it’ll be a mere 4.8mm thick.

In order to create the thin body, they will have to forgo some things that iPhone users are used to, namely, Face ID. Supposedly in order to fit everything they had to get rid of the mechanics that allow you to open your phone with a simple face scan. Instead they’ve opted to return to Touch ID which we haven’t seen in an iPhone since before the X.

Now, the price is probably going to be a sticking point for many buyers. It’s expected to fetch a cool $2,000 – $2,500. That’s more than double the price of a current iPhone. You have to really love the foldable design to part with that kind of dough for a phone.

If all goes well, we should see the new Apple smartphone going into production and ready for shipment by the end of 2026.

In addition to a foldable iPhone, it seems Apple is also working on a foldable iPad. This will allow the tablet to get as big as 20 inches unfolded. That’s bigger than a lot of laptops and might prove to be very popular.

We’ll have to wait to get any official word from Apple on their foldable hardware.
