Starting from its very early days as a platform where you could record and place your homemade videos, YouTube offered an alternative. It served the mass market and unlike typical social media which only offered a literary venue, YouTube focused on active media and believed in the ability of its members to use the service for expressing their everyday lives in the form of video and media. Moving from that point onwards, today YouTube boasts offerings such as dedicated channels and streaming videos and even gaming, all while offering a diverse set of users the ability to create their own little corner on the giant’s platform. Needless to say it’s become a necessity today and the go to place for millions for either streaming the latest song video, viewing documentaries, cat videos and much more.

However what was missing was a dedicated service in place which catered to customers who wanted to stream something along the lines of the latest television show or view the latest news. Other venues such as Netflix or dedicated news apps took care of that. Well no more, from the 28th of October, 2015 YouTube, a Google Product, is offering a subscription based service dubbed “YouTube Red” to its users. Within the United States, YouTube diehard fans are able to try out this ad free paid service for free for a period of one month.

So what pops to thought first? How much? Well truth be told, its pretty cheap and on par with other services – for $9.99 a month you’re able to enjoy an ad free service which is on top of the paid content the video streaming website already boasts. Of course this means that you’ll have a dedicated account and Google is already looking into linking it with your Playstore account to make paying for the service easier. Similarly YouTube has also hinted that this brings them into direct competition with Netflix and other subscription based services.

But all in all this is just the first step, Netflix has built its reputation on offering buffer free streaming of shows and much more online. What’re more it’s also now producing series and winning awards for its work. As compared to YouTube, consumers wouldn’t necessarily compare the two as they offer different services. However it is a first step towards being the alternative television for more than a billion users that the website boasts it has.
