Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the director for Training Day and The Equalizer, Southpaw is the story of Billy “The Great” Hope, played by Jake Gyllenhaal. Billy “The Great” Hope is the reigning Junior Middleweight Boxing Champion of the World. He’s living the life of a successful boxer – an impressive career, a beautiful wife and daughter and a lavish lifestyle. But that all falls apart when his manager, Jordan Mains, played by “50 Cent” drops him.
With the help of Titus “Tick” Wills, played by Forest Whitaker, Billy must redeem himself by reevaluating his lifestyle and working through emotional discord in his expected rise back to the top.
While the story is tired and relatively cliche, the performances by Jake Gyllenhaal and Forrest Whitaker are what make the movie a success. It debuted worldwide on July 24, 2015 and is worth seeing in theaters.
