Call of Duty: Black Ops III was released on November 6th for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 just in time for the holidays. But the question is: how good is it and is it worth forking over $60? I’m going to give you a general review here of the game based off my recent gameplay.
Call of Duty used to be regarded as the premier first-person shooter video game but in recent years over-bloated gameplay and shoddy multiplayer support has tarnished their image. Advanced Warfare which came out in 2014 was so bad it all but made me walk away from the franchise.
Advanced Warfare was an effort to regain fans after Call of Duty: Ghosts was met with mass disapproval. But in this effort they decided to all but abandon what made COD a great franchise. They added exo-suits which basically gave everybody the ability to fly and turn invisible. It was chaos. You have twenty guys flying and boosting through the air shooting wildly.
The last respectable COD game was Call of Duty: Black Ops II so it made sense that COD fans, including myself were excited about Black Ops III, especially considering the fact that the company behind Black Ops II, Treyarch, was coming back for this installment.
Ok, so how does Black Ops III fare in the COD canon? The answer is: it’s alright. It’s not as bad as Advanced Warfare but not even close to being as good as Black Ops II.
You still have the ability to boost through the air (basically flying) but it seems less dramatic for some reason. Maybe it’s the maps but this doesn’t seem as big a problem as Advanced Warfare.
A new system by which you can pick “Specialists” to play as, with each sporting special weapons or abilities is pretty cool. There are 9 in all, some men and some women, so hey, a win for gender equality.
Lack of dedicated servers are still a huge problem. I constantly run into lags and failed games even when I have a strong internet signal.
One thing I never see anyone else mention but it’s something I’ve noticed since AW is the way in which the guns shoot. I don’t mean the recoil or the rate of fire. No, I mean they seem…less realistic. They have this “clicking” effect which somehow lessens the feel of the experience for me. This is still a gripe of mine. Was hoping to see this change.
Zombies is back here with a fun story involving the likes of Jeff Goldblum, Heather Graham and Ron Perlman. I’ve never been big on Zombies but I’ll admit Black Ops III brings it this time with a great continuation of what they did with Zombies Black Ops II
I’ve had more fun playing this game than any of the last two installments so it’s a move in the right direction but it just feels like too much. It needs to tone down. Get out of the future, ground this friggin’ thing already. I have this love/hate relationship with COD where I know what it wants to be and what I want it to be but it’s been years since it’s felt the same.
I think COD’s problems are solved with two very simple points. One: Assign dedicated servers to host multiplayer games. Two: Get rid of the crazy amount of futuristic gimmicks, you don’t need them. We just need a solid shoot ‘em up game in the mold of your early ones. If we want something else we’ll go to Halo and TitanFall.
So if you need a new COD game to replace AW than Black Op III is worth it but don’t expect it to be as good as COD 4 or Black Ops II.
