We have no information on whether the next-gen Sony console will be called PlayStation 5, however, for the sake of this article that’s what we will use. Even though this console is far away, we have some little details that have spread around about this long-awaited console.

The release date is still unknown, as well as the price. What we do know is that it won’t be released before April 2020.

Release Date and Price

Firstly, we know how Sony is when it comes to release dates. There are no official details about this matter, however, in 2018 the head of PlayStation John Kodera, said that the new console was a minimum of three years away. At that time, there was a lot of gossips that the new entertainment box will be released in the upcoming year, meaning 2019. So, it might well be that John Kodera was trying to stop all of the rumors concerning this situation.

When it comes down to the price, Sony has been quiet about this topic as well. They’ve had their fair bit of issues with the price of the PS3 and its enormous price tag. However, they recovered in 2013 when they released the 4th generation at a much more reasonable price. Most importantly, not long ago they’ve stated that the price would be attractive for gamers.

Mark Cerny the lead architect of the PS5 said that they are not sure, however, they might release it at an SRP (Suggested Retail Price). He continued that with its advanced features this would be very appealing to consumers.

Will It Support PS4 Games?

Many were concerned about this matter since many were very disappointed when the PS4 dropped. It supported no backward compatibility whatsoever. However, Cerny also said that the PS5 will support backward compatibility because of the similarities in the internal architecture between the predecessor and the successor. Furthermore, much was said for the importance of this matter, as well as cross-gen play to give the players a seamless transition, which is very smart on their part.

The most annoying issue the PS4 had was its loading times. Whether you turn on a game or transition from one in-game scene to another, the PS4 was lacking the proper strength to give us quick loading times. This was addressed in the new PlayStation already, Mark Cerny showed off the performance of the next-gen console in an investor presentation in May. The new console was pinned against is predecessor the PS4 Pro.

Part of the reason that there will be a speed difference is that they’ve put solid-state drive (SSD) in the PS5, rather than having a sluggish hard drive. At the presentation, the game Spider-Man was turned on to differentiate between the speeds, and the PS5 did it in less than a second. The PS4 was a mile off, about 14 seconds later.

Console Specifications

About what’s inside this beast, Sony has provided all the information regarding what will power this console. Firstly, it will have an AMD chip with a CPU of the third-class Ryzen. It is going to have eight cores with Zen 2 microchip. The graphics are taken care of by a Radeon Navi graphics card.

As far as video and audio go, the console will support 3D audio as well as 8K gaming. Its SSD is also a big deal since it will improve gaming performance much more other than with the regular hard drives.

Final Thoughts

With all of the above-mentioned information that we know, this console seems like it is going to be a success for Sony. Firstly, the price if they manage to bring out the SRP (Suggested Retail Price) they will avoid the problems they’ve had with earlier generations.

The backward compatibility is a big plus for everyone since many of us get nostalgic and would be nice to have the possibility to play some of the earlier games. The performance, well, it speaks for itself and the 15-second gap is a pretty big one.

Anyone who has played GTA V or Madden NFL on the PS4 or the PS3 know that time is precious when you are anxious to conclude your next mission with Trevor or becoming NFL MVP of 2019. However, everything is good and well considering all these details, but we will just have to wait and see how they progress with the next-gen console.
