How many times has mom forgotten your birthday? We’re guessing not many. But does this hold true from the kid’s side as well? The answer is, sort of. According to a recent study, while most kids can remember mom’s birthday without looking at a calendar, the vast majority can’t remember Mother’s Day, nor their favorite color, flower, or restaurant. In fact, most kids don’t seem to put very much effort into Mother’s Day at all.
From shopping last minute (gas station flowers, anyone?) to picking the wrong gift altogether (most mom’s get flowers when the vast majority wanted something else), mom might deserve a little more this year – especially given the current pandemic circumstances.
Moms Fess Up: Mother’s Day Returns
Recent research by The Pearl Source suggests that 28% of moms had to return the gifts they got on Mother’s Day last year. And out of them, 88% felt guilty for doing so. Over 40% of moms said that they felt their kid only got a gift to check it off the to-do list. How sad!
Mother’s Day gifts have, in fact, become so predictable that moms are half-heartedly expecting the same ones every year. Taking her out for a meal or sending her flowers are her first hunches if you ask what their child is going to bring on Mother’s Day. So what’s the solution?
What Mom Really Wants
Here it is, plain and simple. The 2,000-person survey points to moms wanting tech, jewelry, and luxury experiences, like spa treatments and massages. What don’t they want? Moms overwhelmingly are tired of flowers, clothes (they never get the right size, anyway) and home appliances.
For some out of the box ideas, consider any of the following:
● Games and Puzzles
We know what you’re thinking: Games?! Really?! But the reality is that entertainment goes a long way, especially when people are locked up and quarantined in their homes. Plus, there are a variety of customization options out there to make your gift more personal. Imagine a board game with personalized trivia questions! Better yet, we’ve seen some really cool takes on custom Jenga-like games and puzzles featuring memorable photos of the family.
● Tech
Technology has made all our lives easier and added value to a lot of daily activities. For mom, this is no different. Truly wireless Bluetooth earbuds, smart speakers, tablets, you name it – mom wants it. Don’t rule out tech just because you think mom is “too old” for it.
● Books
Again, entertainment is everything. Whatever your mom is into, you can find a book for her without a doubt. What’s more, you can support a local bookstore in your neighbourhood that might be struggling right now. From novels to non-fiction, a well-read mom is definitely in the cards for Mother’s Day.
● Jewelry
This goes without saying. Skip the flowers and grab a pair of stud earrings, a necklace or bracelet. No, you don’t need to spend a fortune. Check out Etsy for all kinds of custom options that don’t need to cost an arm and a leg. And once again, you’d be supporting a budding entrepreneur during a tough economic time.
● Streaming Services
Netflix, Hulu, HBO…the sky is the limit. If mom doesn’t already have a smart TV, hook her up with a Chromecast, Apple TV or Amazon Firestick. A 15-minute tutorial with mom will not only provide her with hours of entertainment but also so good quality time with, well, you!
● Lifestyle luxury products
High-end candles with customized scents for mom are the beginning, not the end, of the gifts in this category. If mom is partial to a massage, there are so many gadgets available to really up the ante at home. Or maybe she loves a good soak. Luxury bath products like salts, sponges, masks, brushes, and more are a winning strategy.
