Back in 2018, the US Supreme Court struck down the federal ban on single-event sports betting allowing each state to pass its own legislation to legalize sports betting. And since then, the floodgates have opened.

Each passing month sees another state pass a sports betting bill or, at the very least, discuss the benefits of establishing a regulated market. And while not all states with legal sports betting allow wagering online, the majority do.

Here we take a look at the most notable mobile sports betting companies that currently operate in the United States and which regulated markets they have launched in.

A US sports betting primer

Before we get to the actual apps there are a couple of things to note about sports betting in the United States.

The online sports betting industry in the US is in its infancy, just like Canada which recently legalized online gambling on single sport events.

Now that the US is starting to regulate and legalize gambling in more and more states there is a strong likelihood that many more international gambling companies will enter the United States market, and as more states come online for iGaming, we can expect to see a much wider range of choice for sports fans than the apps we have listed below.

The passing of sports betting legislation in the US doesn’t always mean that a state will allow mobile apps. For example, sports betting in Montana is legal only in retail locations with a sports betting kiosk and there are no online options at all.

It’s also important to note that not all states with legal online casinos also allow sports betting. The majority of states treat both sports betting and online casino gaming as individual industries and so separate legislation is required for each.

DraftKings

One of the biggest names in Daily Fantasy Sports, DraftKings entered the sports betting market as one of the first online sportsbooks to launch in New Jersey back in August of 2018. Since then, the company has expanded its operations and its sports betting app is now available in:

There are, of course, many other sports betting apps available across the United States. In our last count we found over 40 sports betting apps legally licensed to operate in at least one state. And as legislation is passed and more markets open, we expect this number to grow even higher giving many bettors in the USA an incredible choice of sports betting options.
