Every single worker out there who works in a work site or an office or somewhere away from their home is entitled to have a safe working environment to be in. Any training, any human resources department, and any educational materials at work will be able to tell you that that’s what you’re right for and when you’re what your employer is responsible for.

Without the right plans in place, workplace injuries and illnesses will go through the roof. You are able to go to work and know that you’re going to be safe, and that’s up to your employer to make sure that that’s the case for you. Your employers do not want to be inundated with claims from workers compensation claim lawyers. They want you to be safe and happy in your environment and it’s not just about their bottom line, but about having workers who are healthy and happy to work there. Not to mention the reputational issues that they will have if they are running an unsafe environment could kill their business.

So if you’ve had an accident at work and you have no idea what you should be doing after one occurs, let’s dive in. 

  1. Get some Medical Attention. The first thing to do whenever you have any kind of injury or accident is to get some medical help. There should be a first aid person nominated in the workplace on site to be able to help you if you’ve had an accident. Prompt medical attention is important and if necessary, you need to call emergency services.you do not need to be trying to go back to work with a broken leg
  2. Make a report. Informing your employer or manager of the illness or accident that’s happened in the workplace is important. There has to be accuracy in the details provided so that it could be appropriately logged. If you don’t report the incident, your employer is not going to have any paper trail, and you need a paper trail if you hope to have a workers compensation claim.
  3. Document the incident the best way that you can. If possible, take photos of the scene of the accident and any injuries that you have sustained. If there was anything you could have slipped, tripped, or fallen on that could have contributed to the accident or mishap, then you need to have this documented properly. This way you’ll be able to claim it with your workers.Insurance and you will be able to get a payout if you are left off of work for a while.
  4. Complete an accident report form. This should have the date, time, location and any contributing factors of the accident on the form. Your employer should be able to provide you this, and if you haven’t received it forthwith then you need to ask them for it. This is not something you should allow to slide.
  5. Get involved in the investigation where possible. You need to get involved with the investigation for your workplace accident. It should be conducted by the employer or the relevant authorities and it will help you to determine the cause of the accident so that they can avoid it happening ever again.
