Netflix has announced that they are expanding their game roster. Their new release is going to coincide with the new drop of Squid Games season two. Right now, the company is yet to release any information about what the game is going to entail, or what genre the game is going to be, but it’s expected to be a survival game. So far, the company has been working on numerous spinoffs for the show. Season one was such a success that they went on to create a VR version, while also launching a pop-up experience.

Netflix has Fierce Competition

Netflix knows that they have to expand rapidly or risk falling behind. They know that there are other game providers out there, but releasing exclusive games is what’s helping to give them the edge. When you look at the genres they’re focusing on, it’s clear to see that they’re yet to branch into online casino games, such as live blackjack, poker, and roulette. A lot of this could be down to the fact that they don’t accept online payments through the platform, which would make it impossible for people to place bets on games. They also don’t have any live content, as of yet.

Instead, they give people the chance to play all their games for free, as long as there is an active subscription. By taking this new approach and going down the subscription route, the company has been able to stand out from the crowd while ensuring that they are continually being innovative in their approach to online content.

Ad-Supported Tiers from Netflix

If you take a look at the quarterly report from Netflix, you will see that advertisements have grown over the years and that now, they are of great importance to the company. Their new ad tier is said to be responsible for nearly nearly 50% of new registrations.

When you look at the fact that the plan has only been available for a year and a half, it’s been a huge source of income for the company. The basic plan for Netflix is also being phased out, very slowly. It’s already gone from the UK and Canada, with France said to be next. This is encouraging users to accept the new tiers as well as making sure that the company can adequately fund its new gaming platform.

Although there isn’t a release date for the new Squid Games TV show yet, it’s rumored to be hitting our screens in December. This could be when the new game is being launched too, as Netflix has made it clear that they are coinciding the two, in an attempt to drive both buzz and audience engagement. It makes sense too, seeing as it is much easier to market the launch of a new game if it coincides with a season release of the same name.

With Netflix branching out into original game releases, it’s becoming clear that the company is taking its new gaming avenue very seriously, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see them adopt new tiers for it later down the line. This could include pay-to-play games, along with free trials.
