Sony is gearing up to release their next-gen console. The company has announced that the PS5 Pro will launch on November 7th.
Instead of going all in on releasing a PS6, Sony has opted to double down on the popularity of the PlayStation 5 which launched just over 4 years ago. The PS5 Pro takes everything you love about the previous iteration and gives it a real shot in the arm.
“It’s the most powerful console we’ve ever built,” Mark Cerny, the Lead Architect of the PS5 at Sony, said in a tech presentation video.
This of course isn’t a surprising statement because that’s usually what you go for when you’re designing a next-gen hardware product. But in the case of the PS5 Pro that was the whole point of making it.
It has a boosted GPU that boasts 67% more Compute Units and 28% faster memory than the previous PS5. That means it’s definitely the most powerful Sony console thus far and will deliver a more satisfying performance for some of the higher-graphic games out there.
Ray tracing has also received a tune-up, allowing for “more dynamic reflection and refraction of light.” Apparently it’s rocking double or even triple ray casting compared to the current PS5.
Then (surprise, surprise) there’s the AI integration. Sony is employing AI-driven upscaling that they’re calling PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. It’s all there in the name. They are using AI to boost resolution across gameplay resulting in sharpened image clarity in real time.
Now, you’re not getting all these new goodies for the price of the regular PlayStation. No, they wouldn’t be adding the word “Pro” if they were just looking to replace the base model. The PS5 Pro fetches a hefty $699.99 price tag. In comparison, the current PS5 goes for $499.99.
That high price is surprising, especially considering it’s a digital-only console with no disc tray. Sony clearly feels confident that they can push units without too much competition for the higher-end model.
You can preorder the PS5 beginning September 26th with consoles hitting the shelves on November 7th.
