POWERBALL® offers West Virginia residents the chance to participate in one of America’s most popular multi-state Lottery games. With options for both in-person and online play, here’s what you need to know about POWERBALL drawings in the Mountain State.
How POWERBALL® works
POWERBALL® follows a straightforward format:
Pick five numbers between one and 69. These are the white balls in play. Then choose one more number between one and 26 (the red POWERBALL®).
To win the jackpot, you’ll need to match all six numbers drawn. There are also eight other prize tiers, providing the potential for multiple ways to win. Even just matching the red POWERBALL® could result in a $4 prize.
For an additional $1 per play, the POWER PLAY® option can multiply non-jackpot prizes by 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or when the jackpot is $150 million or less, by 10x.
It’s worth noting that if you match all five white balls but miss the POWERBALL®, adding POWER PLAY® automatically increases your prize to $2 million, regardless of which multiplier is drawn in gameplay.
Playing online in West Virginia
You can now play POWERBALL© online at the official West Virginia Lottery website or app. To play:
- Visit the West Virginia Lottery website and create an account. You’ll need to verify your age and location to do this.
- Add funds to your account
- Select your numbers or opt for a Quick Pick for randomly generated numbers
- Add POWER PLAY® for an extra $1 if you wish
- Complete your purchase
- After the draw, check your account to see your results
Winnings up to $600 are typically credited directly to your online account but larger prizes may require you to visit the West Virginia Lottery office in person.
Purchasing your tickets in-person
If you prefer purchasing tickets at retail locations rather than online, you can still do so. You’ll find POWERBALL® tickets at grocery stores, gas stations, and other Lottery retailers throughout West Virginia. Plus, you’ll still be able to check your results on the app or website.
Each play costs $2. To purchase a play slip, complete it with your chosen numbers or request a Quick Pick. The retailer will print your ticket, just remember to sign the back of it straight away for security.
Ticket sales end at 9:59 PM ET on draw nights.
When are the drawings?
Speaking of draw nights, POWERBALL® drawings take place three times weekly:
- Monday nights at 11:00 PM ET
- Wednesday nights at 11:00 PM ET
- Saturday nights at 11:00 PM ET
What to do if you win
If you land matching numbers in the draw and win, the amount you’ve won will inform the process you need to go through next.
For prizes up to $600 you can visit any Lottery retailer if you purchased your ticket in person. If you played online, check your account as your funds may be deposited there.
For prizes over $600 you’ll need to visit a West Virginia Lottery office with identification and a completed claim form.
