Google's Genie 3 AI Lets Users Build a Video Game World Instantly

By: Nick Gambino

Google’s resident AI lab, DeepMind, has released Genie 3. The new version of the model can create an entire 3D environment that users can walk through and engage with in real time. It’s like creating a video world in an instant.

As with most AI models released to the public, it all starts with a prompt. Simply enter a text prompt of what you’re looking for and Genie 3 generates the environment for you to walk through.

In a video showing off Genie 3, we see a text prompt entered into the model that says “taking part in a show horse event. real world.” The interactive “video” is shown on the right which shows POV of a rider on a horse trotting through and looking around an impressive 3D environment.

This is an extension of generative AI in that they’re not going through a library of 3D assets and placing them in the world around you. Rather, the world is being actively created by AI. This means that technically the chunks of the environment that you’re not actively looking at can disappear. It’s all about generating what you are currently interested in.

Google says that Genie 3 improves on this experience by remembering where exactly things are in a space so when you look back (hopefully) nothing has changed. This is one of the problems with constant, real-time generation – mocking something up brand new every time may affect fidelity. With its innovative approach to immersive environments, Genie 3 is already being talked about alongside some of the best AI gadgets 2025.

In the video, we see the user in a room painting a wall with a roller, creating different paint patterns. The person looks away to generate more of the environment and when they look back the same patterns are there.

Users even have the ability to add to the world they’re in with further prompts. They’re calling these “promptable world events.” Users can actively add more people or objects or whatever they can imagine and type with their fingers.

For now, Genie 3 is only available for a few creators and some academics who can test it as an educational tool.
