Foldable phones refuse to go away. When they first announced them a few years ago I wasn’t sold on the concept. Despite my reservations, the folding smartphone has found its fan base – users who want big screens that fit in your pocket.
At this point nearly every company has created a foldable smartphone except for one of the biggest companies out there – Apple. The tech giant values their clean lineup of iPhones that see an updated version every year, for better or worse. In contrast, Samsung and Google have some wiggle room in their non-dogmatic releases.
That doesn’t mean Apple isn’t working on a foldable iPhone, they just want to make sure they get it right. Apparently they’ve been hard at work trying to perfect a creaseless design and may have finally cracked it.
You see, while there are plenty of folding smartphones out here, they all suffer from the same problem – the hinge that it folds on creates a permanent crease down the middle of the phone screen. While this may not be a dealbreaker for some, I just can’t get behind it.
Apple has reportedly resolved this issue where the crease is invisible. This report comes by way of UDN, a publication in China. They supposedly received this information from sources on the Apple supply chain. If this is true, the iPhone Fold won’t have even the slightest crease in the screen.
They are using a Samsung screen, but the design behind the hinge and other components are all Apple in collaboration with third parties. I have no idea how they’re making the crease disappear, but if this is true, it’ll be quite a breakthrough.
The only problem is, per another report, the iPhone Fold is going to fetch somewhere around $2,400. That’s going to price me out on principle alone.
We’ll have to see when the foldable iPhone finally hits the market. It’s going into the pre-mass production stage and will most likely be released along with the iPhone 18 in September 2026. That’s less than a year from now.
