Health Report
The American Cancer Society estimates that over 134,000 people will be diagnosed with
colorectal cancer this year and nearly 50,000 will die from the disease. A recently published study found 1 in 7 colorectal cancer patients are younger than the
recommended screening age (50). Stacy Hurt, a young, health-conscious athlete for most of her life with no family history of disease, was hit with the news she had stage IV colon cancer on her 44th birthday. It was completely shocking to her. Always rising to the challenge of what life threw her way, Stacy faced her diagnosis with the same courage that she did when presented the news that her son would be permanently disabled with multiple special needs. Stacy is coping with the life-shattering disease she was dealt almost two years ago by being open and honest about what she’s been through and is dedicated to setting a positive example for others through her resilience, faith and humor.
With March being colon cancer awareness month, Stacy wants to help others know the signs and symptoms of colon cancer. Knowing the risk factors of colon cancer is important so that people can take charge of their health and get screened. Colon cancer effects 1 in 20 people, or 5% lifetime for all ages. 15% of those people are under the age of 50. When it does occur in younger people, it seems to be more aggressive and advanced. Unfortunately we do not know what causes colon cancer. Stacy and her oncologist, Doctor Reyes, have a plan of chemotherapy, two back-to-back surgeries, and radiation. It has been eighteen months and Stacy is officially disease free. She does still continue with chemotherapy treatments, but has come a long way since the original diagnosis.
