Last night Tesla announced their Model X – their first entry into the SUV market.
The Model X is an improvement over the earlier Tesla Model S sedan. Mainly because it has a larger interior and is, well, an SUV with large trunk space. It’s nearing closer to a crossover utility vehicle or CUV if you will.
The car is able to seat 7 adults as well as luggage. This is accomplished with 3 seating rows and trunk space in the front and rear (because it’s electric there’s no need for an engine).
Like the Model S and all things Tesla, it’s electric. It’s expected to go about 250 miles on a full charge. Now, what’s really cool about the Model X is not the fact that it’s electric or that it looks awesome or even that it has a lot of interior space. The coolest feature is the gull-wing door set-up or what Tesla calls falcon doors.
The falcon doors are unique to the Tesla. At first glance it might evoke pictures of the DeLorean. But look closer because the doors don’t swing out but instead swing up. That allows convenience in tight spaces. The doors never go out further then the car itself. I swear when you see these things open it looks like it’s getting ready for take-off.
In case you’re wondering whether you’ll be able to afford one of these bad boys, the price starts at $130,000. So if you are comfortable spending that much on a vehicle then have at it.
One of the most exciting features of the Model X is the acceleration. This badboy can go 0-60 in 3.2 seconds, which is on par with sports cars made in Europe.
My only disappointment from the launch event is there wasn’t some sort of voiceover that exclaimed, “Where we’re going, we NEED roads.” You know, because of the DeLorean and Back to the Future…
