Blockbuster movie reshoots that cost millions upon millions of dollars are commonplace in Hollywood. Usually these are pick-up shots or new scenes that are filmed after it’s found something’s missing in the edit.
So when it was announced that Justice League would be engaging in reshoots under the direction of Joss Whedon, nobody was surprised. But that didn’t stop one absurdly funny story from making the rounds.
Henry Cavill, who plays Superman, has been off shooting Mission: Impossible 6. The schedule for the reshoots required him to bounce between sets. There’s just one problem. He grew a mustache for his role in the Tom Cruise spy flick and that kind of face dressing would simply not work for Superman.
Now you might think he could just shave it off, shoot his scenes for Justice League and then fly back to M:I6 and boom, Bob’s your uncle. Well as luck would have it, the timing of everything doesn’t really work out and he won’t have time to regrow the mustache. Not to mention, you risk continuity errors by having him regrow it. What if for some reason it doesn’t look the same?
The solution? They’re going to shoot his Superman scenes with the mustache and digitally remove it in post. No. Really. Or at least that’s how Variety reported it.

“’Justice League’s’ Man of Steel had expected to be able to finish shooting the sixth ‘Mission: Impossible’ film before needing to don Superman’s spandex again,” Variety stated. “…a mustache he grew for his character in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ sequel will have to be digitally removed in post-production. Paramount, which is distributing the ‘Mission: Impossible’ sequel, would not allow Cavill to shave the facial hair while production was taking place.”
After allowing the internet to have its fun with Mustache-gate for a couple days, Cavill himself spoke up in an Instagram post. The humorous post likens the whole scenario to a sinister plot to destroy his mustache.
“There has been no discussion over whether to shave or not to shave for the JL reshoots, simply a relentless campaign to put an end to the seemingly inexorable conquest of this despotic ‘stache,” Cavill wrote.
Well, if he does keep the ‘stache for the reshoots, I’m sure the best visual effects guys in the business will be hard at work making sure to deliver the clean-shaven son of Krypton we’ve grown accustomed to.
