Once this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious s**t. Scratch that, even a still photo of the newest DeLorean Omega is enough to make you flip out. The company released images of the concept car at the same time they wheeled out a prototype of their more standard Alpha5 at the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance auto show.
We’ve seen photos of the Alpha5, but this is the first time the public has gotten an in-person view of this newest take on the 80s classic DMC DeLorean. The all-electric car was designed to look like its famously futuristic-looking predecessor had stuck around and gone through decades’ worth of iterations before landing on this newest version.
“Our goal was to bridge the gap between the past and the future, so we produced extensions of the DMC-12 that would have been icons in their time to create the next generation of vehicles, starting with the Alpha5,” CEO of DeLorean Motors Reimagined, Joost de Vries, said in a press release.
It still has the gullwing doors, but these ones allow you to access both the front and rear seats. The 80s version was only a two-seater. This slick EV will hit 60 MPH in only 2.99 seconds and tops out at 155 MPH, so you shouldn’t have any problem getting up to 88 MPH (responsibly, of course). You’ll get around 300 miles on a full charge. That’s pretty comparable to Tesla.
But it’s not the Alpha5 that is going to keep people talking. It’s pretty standard, if not a slick design. The Omega on the other hand was conceived to kick down doors and cause a scene. In fact, this guy will give the long-awaited Tesla Cybertruck a run for its money…if they ever build it.
The DeLorean Omega is something you might find in a sci-fi movie set on Mars in 2073 (they’re promoting it as a 2040 design, but it’s even more futuristic than that). The sleek body sits atop tires that I’ve only ever seen fitted on toy cars. They’re large and rugged, made for off-roading on even the roughest terrain. Again, it remains a concept, and seeing as though the Alpha5 won’t see production for another couple of years, who knows when we’ll see the Omega?
The company seems to be distancing itself from any reference to Back to the Future. While I get you to want the car designs to stand on their own and possibly avoid any legal repercussions, it’s impossible to ask us not to think of them in the sentence. It’s pretty safe to say that without the iconic 1985 movie, nobody would still be talking about the DeLorean. It was a failed project and only skirted into pop culture thanks to its part in messing with the space-time continuum.
They’re shooting for a 2024 release for the Alpha5 with a hefty price tag of $145,000.
