Joe Nichols Brings Awareness to IPF | NewsWatch Review

Country western superstar singer/songwriter Joe Nichols is world-famous as a chart-topping regular with such hits as “Freaks Like Me”, “Brokenheartsville”, “Gimmie That Girl”, “Sunny and 75”, and countless more. However, what most of his fans do not know is that Joe lost his father Michael to a rare and fatal lung disease called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) after numerous misdiagnoses and years of suffering continuing, disruptive, respiratory symptoms. To raise awareness of this lesser known disease and encourage others to avoid the same prolonged pre-diagnosis experience as his father, Joe is involved in the launch of a new awareness campaign called “Breathless: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at IPF.”

The “Breathless” campaign brings together real people sharing real stories about how IPF has touched and impacted their lives and seeks to educate and empower those living with the disease to seek early diagnosis and treatment. The campaign website www.BreathlessIPF.com features a number of engaging resources for people living with IPF and their caregivers, and Joe is asking that even those people who are not personally affected by this disease visit the website and share the campaign content via Facebook or Twitter. Doing so may reach someone in need, providing valuable information that may spur them to take action.

IPF is a rare and fatal lung disease that causes permanent scarring of the lungs and difficulty breathing. IPF affects as many as 132,000 Americans, making it four times more common than ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Tragically, 40,000 people die each year from IPF (the same number as die each year from breast cancer). Diagnosing IPF can be difficult and take years because the symptoms of IPF are similar to and often confused with other “better known” and more common respiratory diseases like asthma, COPD, and congestive heart failure. The prognosis for IPF is poor as most people with IPF live only three to five years after diagnosis. Although there is no cure for IPF, there are treatments available, so the earlier the diagnosis, the better.

Joe Nichols will be available to discuss his father’s experience with IPF, his quest to raise awareness of the fatal disease, and where your viewers can go for more information. Joe will be joined by Dr. Marilyn Glassberg, a nationally-renowned pulmonologist from the University of Miami, who will be available to speak about the signs and symptoms of IPF, what makes it such a serious disease, why diagnosis takes so long, and why a timely and accurate diagnosis is so vital, and why it’s important for those who think they may have IPF to seek timely medical attention and treatment.
