The new iOS 15.4 (and iPadOS 15.4) is the fourth large update to iOS 15, as the numbering implies. This new update brings with it several new features, including a couple that we’ve been waiting quite a while for. In addition to new functionality, Apple has also added a bunch of new emojis.

Face ID with mask

We could’ve used this one way back in 2020 when we first all masked up, but I guess better late than never. Though with the loosening of Covid restrictions, I’m not sure we’re going to be wearing masks for much longer.

The new feature allows you to use Face ID without taking your mask off. To set it up you want to go Settings > Face ID & Passcode and enter your passcode. Then turn on “Face ID with a Mask.” You’ll have to redo your Face ID scan without your mask so it can focus on the area around your mask, like your eyes. That’s all and you’re ready to go.

Emojis

There are 37 new emojis and 75 new skin tones in the iOS 15.4 update. I’m not going to list them all, but for a complete list you can go here. Some highlights include Melting Face, Saluting Face, Face Holding Back Tears and Face with Peeking Eye (so you don’t have to only use the monkey covering his face in embarrassing situations). You’ll also see more pregnant person options, a Biting Lip, Heart Hands, Index Pointing at the Viewer and a ton of new objects and foods.

Apple Card widget

I’m surprised this didn’t exist until now. You can now add an Apple Card widget to your home screen for easy and fast access. This will allow you to check your balance and spending habits at a quick glance.

Passwords

Security is pretty high up there on the iPhone user priority list which is why Apple has added some new password features. You can now add notes to your password in iCloud Keychain, instead of just the password itself. You’ll find this in the “Password” section of “Settings.”

If you use Passwords, you’re used to being badgered by your iPhone to change weak or compromised passwords on the regular. Whether you can’t or don’t want to change those passwords, you can now hide those alerts.

There are a ton of other goodies in iOS 15.4, including a new Siri voice and podcast filters. For a complete list of new features, click here.
