After years of waiting, Tesla finally released the Cybertruck, delivering the first electric utility vehicles last month. Now Elon Musk is saying they’re looking to add a mod package that will allow you to turn the Cybertruck into a boat.

Like a lot of Tesla and other Musk news, this insight into future offerings comes way of a reply on X/Twitter. In this case it was in response to a post by Sawyer Merritt.

“We are going to offer a mod package that enables Cybertruck to traverse at least 100m of water as a boat,” Musk said in the tweet (or X post). “Mostly just need to upgrade cabin door seals.”

Nothing has been officially announced, so we don’t know if we’ll ever actually see an amphibious version of the Tesla Cybertruck. And something tells me it’ll need more than just door seals to make it work. I don’t say this as an expert but as someone who has a general understanding that boats and cars are different.

With how long it took the Cybertruck to hit the market, something also tells me turning it into a boat isn’t going to be a top priority. It may already be somewhat buoyant, but that’s not going to be enough to make it a river-faring craft.

If they plan on offering a mod package that simply seals it from any water getting in so you can do any additional modifications yourself, that’s one thing. If they want to offer a full boat modification package, they’ll have to include a motor of some type to allow you to navigate through waters. I just don’t see that happening anytime soon.

I think Tesla should focus on getting all of these backlogged Cybertruck orders filled before they start offering a Transformer that allows you to go boating in your car.
