Another year, another iPhone. With the release of the iPhone 17 at Apple’s “Awe Dropping” event, we have got our most high-tech of the series.

But that goes without saying – every year is an improvement over the last. The real question is: Is the iPhone 17 worth the price? Well, for those on a budget then probably not. Especially if you have the iPhone 15 or 16.

If you’ve got money to burn or you’re rocking an old enough phone where compatibility is starting to become a problem, then the iPhone 17 may be for you. So let’s break down what the new Apple smartphone has to offer.

Apple ProMotion Tech

You may not have heard those words put together like that, but ProMotion Tech has been around in other Apple devices for years. It was introduced to the iPad back in 2017 and hit the MacBook Pro in 2021, but we’ve never seen it in a phone before.

The iPhone 17 is the first to run on ProMotion which means scrolling and gameplay is about to get a whole lot smoother. The proprietary tech essentially employs an adaptive refresh rate up to 120 Hz. Couple that with a brighter screen and it’s going to feel like a different experience from any of the earlier iPhone models.

Cameras

We can’t get a new iPhone without some camera upgrades. While you’re not going to see a big difference in the main camera when you’re taking regular photos, you’ll notice a difference when you zoom out. The ultrawide lens is getting a big bump from 12 MP to 48 MP.

The front-facing camera is also getting a shot in the arm with some tinkering under the hood to make it sharper.

Price

The iPhone 17 starts at $799, the iPhone 17 Air at $999 and the iPhone Pro at $1099. While I’ve opted for the Pro in recent years, the Air seems to be a pretty good deal, offering pro features at a lower price point.

The iPhone 17 is available in 5 different colors: dark gray, green, lavender, light blue and silver-white.

Pre-orders start on September 12 and the iPhone 17 drops officially on September 19.
