Nest 3rd Generation

Tech Report

Nest, a Google-owned company, is at it again after having already released the Nest Cam and Nest Protect this year, they’re now back with the third generation Nest Thermostat.

Remember the old days? You know, when you had to keep getting up to walk over to that ugly box on the wall. The box that made little to no sense, kind of like trying to understand backgammon. And just when you thought you figured it out, it seemed to break every rule you had just discovered.

Nest 3rd GenerationWell, no more because now we have smart thermostats. The first Nest thermostat, known also as the Nest Learning Thermostat, hit walls back in 2011 and quickly became a popular alternative to the ugly box.

The design was simple, a small circular panel with a screen that turns on when you approach. To control it and set a temp you turn the silver dial to navigate the menu and push in to select. It then learns, just as any smart device should, your preferences and habits making its own adjustments that save you on energy bills.

And as it is a smart device it’s able to be controlled through WiFi using your laptop, tablet or smartphone.

With the release of the 3rd generation Nest Thermostat, the design has been made even simpler starting with a larger face and slimmer body. Additionally, they’ve added a feature called Farsight that allows the thermostat to turn on and show you the temp and time as you approach it from a farther distance.

Added temp sensors make it more accurate as well so it’ll get you closer to that ideal temp.

Having just been released there aren’t many user reviews but it’s starting to look favorable which makes sense as they’ve improved on an existing workable model.

And as always there will be updates to the software as stated on their site, “Like all our Nest products, the 3rd Generation Nest Thermostat will keep getting better through software updates. We’ll keep coming up with ways to make things even more thoughtful. So your home is even more thoughtful, too.”

Aw, Nest, you’re so sweet.

You can pick up the Nest Thermostat for $249 at nest.com.
