Amazon to Offer 7 Weeks of “Black Friday” Sales

By: Nick Gambino

Amazon has announced its plan to offer 7 weeks of “Black Friday” sales instead of the traditional one day. The 7-week sale period is already under way and will continue until December 22nd.

It’s already being compared to the doomed “Prime Day” that Amazon tried out back in July where consumers stirred up a social media storm bashing the e-commerce site for putting things on sale that people didn’t really want. Now, just to clarify, when I say “doomed” I mean from a PR standpoint. Per Amazon it seems on Prime Day they surpassed the previous year’s Black Friday peak order rates.

Though this recent ploy drags up memories of the “dreaded” Prime Day, it already seems to be somewhat of a different affair. There are some decent deals and sales already hitting the site. Deals like 30% off a 55-inch 4K TV or 60% off an electric fireplace heater with remote control. Each day sees new sales going up.

For Prime members Amazon has decided to sweeten the pot, obviously. Anyone who has subscribed to Amazon Prime ($99 a year) will get early access to over 30,000 Lightning Deals. I haven’t personally seen anything exciting in the Lightning Deals section yet but just knowing that I’m seeing deals earlier than most others gives me a certain sense of undeserved power. A sense of entitlement perhaps, that probably doesn’t suit me very well.

But maybe I’m just letting it go to my head. After all, Prime members only get in on the action 30 minutes earlier than everyone else. This is particularly useful if you’re looking to buy something that’s in limited stock but if you’re not keeping a watchful eye on the site, it doesn’t do much for you.

To title this in any way a “Black Friday sale” when it goes for 49 days is strictly a marketing ploy. It really is just a holiday sale thus making Black Friday less of a thing. Come to think of it Black Friday is just a marketing ploy, continued as part of an almost dead department store system in a day and age when most do their shopping online.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t going to be keeping an eye on the Amazon Black Friday page every day to see if something I want goes on a too-good-to-be-true sale. After all, I am a Prime subscriber and have never been one to walk around a red carpet rolled out for me. Even if the red carpet is pulled out from under me after 30 minutes.
