In support of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is poised to be the biggest movie ever, Facebook will allow you to add a lightsaber filter to your profile photo. Anyone who’s anyone is tapping into their inner nerd and adding the filter.

I knew there was a lot of hype for this 7th installment in the popular series but it wasn’t until the new lightsaber filter was added to Facebook that I saw just how many people we’re jumping on the Star Wars bandwagon.

People who I know for a fact could care less about Star Wars and some who haven’t even seen it are adding the filter. Now that’s some marketing. I liken it to the “Straight Outta” meme marketing tool that spread like wildfire when Straight Outta Compton hit theaters this past summer. I saw people sharing those memes who thought “NWA” stood for “Neighborhood Walk Association.”star_wars_facebook_lightsaber

You can barely turn your head 45 degrees without being subjected to Star Wars advertising. From Subway to Target to Jeep to Adidas, everyone is in on it.

Now, it’s not that we haven’t see this before. I recall each time a new Star Wars prequel was imminent all you would see is Yoda and R2-D2 everywhere you looked. This isn’t something particular only to newly released Star Wars movies.

I recall back in the 90s when they were re-releasing the original Star Wars trilogy in theaters with added scenes using CGI, the world went mad for it. Every theater in my neighborhood, (I grew up a block from Times Square in New York so that means a lot of theaters), had lines wrapped around the block waiting to get in. I’m not at all ashamed to admit that I was one of them.star wars 1

But of course bringing us back to 2015, if you’re looking to get into the spirit of a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, go ahead and add the lightsaber filter. It’s quite simple. If you just log onto Facebook it’ll probably pop up with a “Try it” button or go here. You can choose between blue (good) or Kylo Ren’s red saber (evil).

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, directed by the modern-day Spielberg, J.J. Abrams, opens this Friday, December 18th. But of course if you really can’t wait you can catch a midnight showing on Thursday if you’re lucky enough to find a ticket still available.
