With the announcement of the new Tesla Model 3 sedan by CEO Elon Musk, we finally have the promise of an electric car for the masses. The Model 3 base model will start at $35,000 which is “expensive” for a sedan but pretty good for an electric car that has never really been cheaper than $75,000.
The car is said to have a range of 215 miles on one charge and can go 0-60 mph in under 6 seconds. It can comfortably fit 5 adults as Musk puts it, “Comfortably is the important part here.” From the windshield all the way to the back of the car we will have one long roof window giving a truly panoramic experience. It’ll probably really help out those who get carsick in the backseat. And unique to Tesla, staying true to the Model S which came before, there will be storage space both in the front and back. “More cargo capacity than any gasoline car of the same external dimensions,” says Musk.
To pre-order a Tesla Model 3 you have to lay down $1000, a fraction of what the car will cost you when it hits the market. Within 24 hours of their announcement they tallied up 198,000 pre-orders and by the end of the weekend that number hit 276,000. If you consider that every car is going to cost minimally $35,000 then those pre-orders are worth $12 billion – minimally. That pre-order number is only expected to rise. But just because the car was announced don’t expect it to hit the assembly line next week. They are looking to push the Model 3 into production by 2017 with a prototype ready in Spring 2016.
They can use the time between now and its official launch to work on extending the distance you can get on a full charge and other tweaks to make this guy a real success. And hopefully we won’t get a disappointing production delay like with the Model S and Model X.
